Ballet ATAP

Overview
The Affiliate Training and Assessment Programme is The Royal Ballet School’s programme for private and recreational dance training. Dance teachers train directly with The Royal Ballet School and are then accredited to deliver the programme to students in their own dance schools as Affiliate Teachers. They conduct their own assessments, which are then moderated by The Royal Ballet School.

Ballet vocabulary, as well as the study of repertoire, choreography, creative tasks, and art form appreciation is all part of the ATAP method. This approach differs from the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD), where students practice a set syllabus and are assessed on this set work. We have been utilising this new ATAP approach in classes for several months and have observed significant benefits to the students’ learning and development. The students have thoroughly enjoyed learning repertoire and creating their own work, aspects that are vital for developing a greater appreciation of dance.

What are the benefits for my child?
  • Greater autonomy, deeper learning and appreciation of the art form as a whole
  • Enjoyment of the learning process
  • Enhanced creativity and art appreciation through the study of repertoire and choreography
  • A solid technical foundation, high-quality movement ability and performance quality
  • Participation in a holistic approach to ballet training that reflects current teaching pedagogy and approaches

By participating in The Affiliate Training and Assessment Programme (ATAP), Sole To Soul Dance Studio provides our ATAP students a broader spectrum of dance education. This encompasses choreography, repertoire, and cultivating a genuine appreciation for the art form.
After experiencing the value of this approach for students, we intend to continue with the ATAP System of Training, although we may incorporate a combination of RAD and ATAP exams as students progress through their training. This transfer from RAD to ATAP will be a gradual process. As with RAD exams, ATAP assessments will be taken when teachers believe students are prepared and have reached their full potential at each level. We will be in touch when the standard is achieved, and more information on exams will be provided in due course.

The length of study at each level is approximately the same as the RAD; however, the levels are slightly different. For example, if your child was previously or has passed RAD Grade 3 exam, they would be Level 3 ATAP. The performance expectation and criteria do not equate grade to level. ATAP levels are more challenging with more comprehensive learning involved. The table below represents an illustrative example of the comparison between RAD and ATAP - it is not conclusive or definitive, and we will make recommendations on the most suitable course of action for your child.

Who is it for?
Grades / LevelsEntry PrerequisitesLevel Equivalent
ATAP Level 16 to 7 yearsRAD PPID & PID
ATAP Level 28 to 9 yearsRAD G1 & G2
ATAP Level 310 to 11 yearsRAD G3 & G4
ATAP Level 412 years & upRAD G5 & G6
ATAP Level 512 years & upRAD Interfound / Intermediate
ATAP Level 612 years & upRAD Advanced 1 & 2

If your child decides they would like to participate in the ATAP examinations, they will be expected to maintain and follow through on certain requirements, including but not limited to:

  • Continued consistent attendance in their classical ballet class
  • Participation in the mock (practice) ATAP examinations
  • Possible private or small group lessons should the teachers feel extra practice is needed
